Changelog

Every update shipped to this editor, newest first. Each day lists everything that went live that day.

October 26, 2026

  • Scroll is now the default view when you open a PDF, instead of Page.
  • Fixed the toolbar scrolling away instead of staying pinned to the top of the screen while scrolling through a document in Scroll view.
  • The Page/Scroll toggle is now Scroll, then Page, left to right.
  • Fixed a placed signature sometimes being gone when you reopened a downloaded PDF, even though it showed up fine before downloading.
  • Fixed the Privacy page's "turn all off" confirmation saying "four" small flags when a 5th (Site Tour) had been added since.
  • Dark Mode now carries over to every page on the site — previously it only applied to the editor itself, and every other page (including this changelog) stayed light regardless of what you'd chosen.
  • Clicking a tool menu, or anywhere else on the page, now closes the guided tour — previously the only way out was the X button.
  • Fixed pages occasionally taking a very long time to load — or briefly showing the wrong page — when a slow connection caused the offline-support feature's network check to stall.
  • Added Scan to PDF — take a photo of each page in a row with your phone or tablet's camera and combine them into one PDF, right in the browser.
  • Updated some wording across the site that named other companies or products, to keep every page's copy about this editor itself.
  • Merge PDFs now lets you select several files at once — PDFs, photos, or documents — and walks you through picking pages from each one before merging them all in together.
  • Merge PDFs now accepts a photo or document as the second file too, converting it to PDF automatically before you pick which pages to bring in — handy for merging a few scanned photos into one PDF.
  • Replaced Google Analytics with Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookie-free way to count visits that can't identify anyone — see the updated Privacy page.

October 25, 2026

  • The guided tour's Download step now opens the real download panel, showing the format conversions, compression, and password protection options available there.

October 24, 2026

  • Clicking away from a text box, image, signature, or sticky note you just placed now just deselects it, instead of immediately placing another one on top of wherever that click landed.
  • Fixed the mobile toolbar wrapping a category tab under Upload instead of lining it up under Edit.
  • Fixed the font size field (Add Text, Watermark, Page Numbers) snapping back to the old number when you tried to clear it to type a new one.
  • Fixed a placed signature on mobile not deleting when you tapped its X, and sometimes leaving a new one behind instead.
  • Fixed a placed signature not being draggable with a finger on mobile.
  • The "save your progress?" reminder now backs off to a longer gap between appearances once you've dismissed it once, instead of asking again every 5 minutes.
  • Added an optional guided tour that walks new visitors through every tool, offered once right after their first upload.
  • Fixed the Add Text / Text Edit floating toolbar running off the right edge of the screen on mobile.
  • The post-download review prompt now also suggests installing the Chrome extension.

October 23, 2026

  • The Privacy Policy's "What's saved on your device" section now lets you turn off any of those saved preferences individually, or all at once.
  • Added a "What's saved on your device" section to the Privacy Policy, listing every small preference stored locally in your browser and what it's for.
  • The post-download review prompt now checks in once more around your 5th download if you dismissed it the first time, rather than never asking again.
  • Added proper resize handles to Add Image / Edit Image — drag from any edge or corner, not just one corner dot. Fixed Edit Image occasionally creating a duplicate copy of an image after moving or resizing it.
  • PDF text is now genuinely selectable and copyable with your cursor — for real embedded text immediately, and for scanned pages once Make Searchable has recognized the words. Added a dedicated Copy Text page.
  • Fixed the Find bar sometimes overlapping the toolbar instead of sitting cleanly below it.
  • Restructured the homepage with a features overview and a short FAQ below the hero, and added a Contact page for bug reports and suggestions.
  • Redesigned the toolbar: the old 22-button row, which wrapped messily on mobile, is now four organized dropdown menus — Edit, Markup, Pages, and Document.
  • Added a page explaining there's no file size limit, since nothing is ever uploaded.
  • Added PDF-to-X conversions: download as JPG, PNG, WEBP, TXT, Markdown, HTML, Word, or PowerPoint. Fixed printed page numbers getting pulled into the text-based conversions, and fixed spacing and image placement in Word exports.
  • Fixed the mobile keyboard-avoidance fix sometimes leaving the focused field a little too low on screen.
  • Fixed the on-screen keyboard covering the text box or sticky note you were actively typing into, on mobile.
  • Added a visible on-page hint explaining what to do once a tool is armed — now shows correctly on mobile too, with wording that adapts to touch devices.
  • Added OCR (Make Searchable) for scanned PDFs, and a Find in Document search.
  • Fixed downloaded PDFs silently losing their fillable form fields, even without touching Fill Form.

October 22, 2026

  • Added this changelog page.
  • Fixed the compressed-size estimate looking stuck on large PDFs, and explained that compression runs in your browser and can take a few minutes.
  • Fixed Compress sometimes making large, image-heavy PDFs bigger instead of smaller.
  • Added Watermark and Page Numbers tools, with opacity, rotation, and image watermark support.
  • Added Compress PDF as its own dedicated tool and page.
  • Added Add Image and Edit Image tools, plus three new landing pages.

  • Added more links between related tool pages across the site.
  • Added keyboard shortcuts for common actions, with a settings panel to turn each one on or off.
  • Added PowerPoint (.pptx) to PDF conversion.
  • Blackout now permanently removes the covered content from the exported file, not just visually covers it.
  • Fixed several mobile layout bugs — overflowing buttons, tooltips popping up on tap, and the page jumping while scrolling.
  • Redesigned the editing toolbar into a cleaner dropdown on mobile.
  • Added TXT, HTML, Markdown, CSV, WEBP, and HEIC to PDF conversion.
  • Added Sticky Note and Strikethrough annotation tools.
  • Added a one-time prompt asking for a review after someone's first download.

  • Added an FAQ page covering common questions about privacy, signing, redaction, and more.
  • Added support for opening and editing password-protected PDFs.
  • Fixed Edit Text not detecting any text on pages that are rotated in the source PDF.

October 19, 2026

  • Added dedicated pages for Blackout, Draw/Pen, Edit Text, Highlighter, Rotate Page, and Reorder Pages.
  • Added page rotation, reordering, PDF compression, password protection, dark mode, and a Blackout tool.
  • Added dedicated pages for Sign PDF, Merge PDF, Remove Pages, and Add Text, each linking straight into the editor.

October 18, 2026 — Launch

  • Launched the editor: add text, click-to-edit real existing text, highlight, draw, sign, remove pages, and download — all running entirely in your browser, with undo/redo and Page/Scroll view modes.
  • Added a Merge Pages feature, improved font matching, and fixed text-edit positioning.
  • Went live at free-online-pdf-editor.com, with a dedicated page for each tool and a privacy policy.
