Select and Copy Text From Any PDF

Click and drag across a PDF's text the same way you would on any web page — no special tool to arm, nothing to download first. Works immediately on a PDF with real text, and on a scanned PDF too, once Make Searchable recognizes its words.

Why this beats a flat "image" viewer

This editor

  • Select and copy text immediately, no extra step
  • Works on scanned PDFs too, once Make Searchable has run
  • Double-click grabs one word, drag grabs a whole passage
  • Nothing uploaded to make any of it work

Typical basic PDF viewers

  • Some render every page as a flat image — nothing to select at all
  • "Convert to text" often means a full export/download round-trip
  • Many online extractors need the whole file uploaded first

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I select text on some PDFs?

If a PDF was scanned — a photo or image of a page, not real text — there's nothing to select yet, in any PDF viewer, not just this one. Run Make Searchable first (it recognizes the words on the page), and after that, the recognized text becomes selectable too.

Does selecting text here work like a normal web page?

Yes — click and drag across a passage to select it, double-click to grab a single word, then copy with Ctrl/Cmd+C. There's no special button or mode to turn on first; it works as soon as a PDF is open.

Will selecting or copying text change my PDF?

No — selecting and copying text is read-only. Nothing about the document changes unless you actually use one of the editing tools, like Text Edit or Highlighter.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere to make its text selectable?

No — the PDF is never uploaded to a server. The selectable text is built directly from the document's own data (or, for a scanned page, from Make Searchable's recognition results) entirely inside your browser tab.
